In 2011 I had an idea. There’s always danger in having ideas. In this case the idea was to have an amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight. This didn’t come right out of the blue, I’d trained in martial arts on and off (mostly off) for well over ten years and had even fought and lost in an amateur MMA tournament over five years previously. However, a mixture of work, children, obesity, laziness and excuses had kept me out of the gym and off the mats.
The difference this time was the Big 4-0 looming up on the horizon like Old Father Time tapping his watch followed closely by The Grimm Reaper…..
OK, I’m exaggerating somewhat, but I could see in my expanding waistline, greying beard and increasing need for a sit down following any kind of exertion that my athletic prime was slipping away. I was damned if I’d let it go without a scrap!
I’m one of those people who needs a goal to aim for or everything becomes work-a-day. Aiming to compete before I hit forty gave me a realistic, measurable, time bound target, a perfect end point to aim for. A lot of what I learnt and experienced on that journey was chronicled in a previous blog FightingatForty.blogspot.com.
However, there was also a lot of stuff that came up that didn’t fit that story. That’s how this blog came about.
Some of it will be about training – MMA, grappling, strength and conditioning – some of it will be about other stuff that I think is interesting, useful or entertaining. I’ll only ever speak for myself – if you can identify with what I write I’m happy that I connected. If you can’t, well hopefully it’ll be useful to hear another voice.
